This committee was formed by legislation (SB411) passed during the 2015 Nevada legislative session. The committee is authorized to place a question on the November, 2016 ballot asking voters to approve a tax or taxes to fund school construction and repairs for the Washoe County School District. If the voters approve, the tax would become law. Per SB411, the committee has five different taxes that it may consider.
This is a community effort to solve a community problem: a lack of funding for school construction to perform critical repairs and to build new schools to relieve overcrowding. This is an effort to support students in the Washoe County School District, but is not a part of the school district. If successful, funds raised by any ballot question this committee proposes could only be used for school construction and repairs (WCSD’s capital fund) and could not be used to pay teachers, administrators, or other district costs (WCSD’s general fund).
